How your weight loss treatment works

From your first clinic visit to ongoing care — GP-led at every stage of your weight loss journey

  • 1
    Book your appointment
Choose the option that suits you — from a short GP-only check (best if you have no health concerns) to a longer review with optional blood tests (available at our lab clinics). As part of booking, you'll complete a short medical questionnaire so your GP has your history ready before you arrive.
  • 2
    Clinic checks and GP consultation
Your GP reviews your medical history, assesses your suitability, and answers any questions. If you've booked an appointment with blood tests, a healthcare assistant will see you first to take your vitals (height, weight, blood pressure, heart rate, waist circumference), blood samples, and a short lifestyle review — with same-day results.
  • 3
    Your treatment plan
If treatment is right for you, your GP issues an electronic prescription. Your medication arrives as a complete package, with everything you need to get started and clear instructions for use.
  • 4
    Ongoing GP-led care
We check in within your first week to make sure you're settling in. After that, repeat prescriptions, side-effect reviews and dose adjustments are managed through your secure patient portal — with every repeat reviewed by a GP, and an in-depth review at 6 months.

Choosing between online weight loss services and in-clinic GP care

Why many patients choose DocTap over online pharmacies and app-based services

Both options can support your weight loss journey — but DocTap offers face-to-face care, proper clinical checks, and ongoing doctor-led support, not just a form and a delivery.

Online weight loss services

  • Your form is reviewed remotely, often by a pharmacist prescriber — not a doctor
  • Photo uploads are required to verify your BMI — many find it awkward or invasive
  • Weight, blood pressure, and other vital measurements are self-reported, with no or few clinical checks
  • Repeat prescriptions often auto-approved, with minimal clinical review

DocTap weight loss service

  • Full in-person GP assessment — with optional same-day bloods for a complete health picture
  • No photos needed — your GP sees and assesses you in person
  • When you choose an appointment with blood tests, vitals are taken in clinic by a lab technician for accurate clinical readings, not self-reported
  • Every repeat prescription is reviewed by a GP who decides whether to continue, adjust, reduce or pause — real clinical oversight, not auto-renewal
  • Beyond treatment, we manage your weight-related conditions and refer you to a specialist when needed.
  • Medication price-matched to the cheapest online pharmacies

FAQs - Eligibility and assessment

Am I eligible for weight loss treatment at DocTap?

Eligibility is based on your BMI, your medical history, and a full clinical assessment with a GP. As a rough guideline, treatment is usually considered if your BMI is 30 or over — or 27 and over with a weight-related condition like type 2 diabetes or high blood pressure. Your GP will walk you through it at your appointment and confirm what's right for you.

Are there reasons I wouldn't be prescribed treatment?

Yes. Weight loss medication isn't suitable for everyone, and there are some conditions where we won't be able to prescribe it. These include: 1) Pregnancy, breastfeeding, or planning pregnancy in the next 12 months; 2) A personal or family history of medullary thyroid cancer or MEN2 syndrome; 3) A history of pancreatitis; 4) Type 1 diabetes; 5) An active or currently treated eating disorder. Other conditions and medications may also affect whether treatment is right for you — your GP will go through your full history at your appointment. If medication isn't suitable, they'll talk you through alternative options.

What happens if I'm not prescribed medication?

You'll still have a full GP consultation with tailored lifestyle and clinical advice. If bloods were included, you'll get your results and a clear next step — whether that's follow-up, referral, or simply reassurance.

FAQs - Safety and side effects

Is weight loss medication safe?

Prescription weight loss medication is licensed and well-studied, but like any medication it carries risks. That's exactly why we insist on a GP-led assessment, in-person first consultation, and ongoing reviews — to make sure it's working safely for you.

What are the common side effects?

Most side effects are gastrointestinal — nausea, reflux, constipation, or diarrhoea — and usually settle within the first few weeks. Your GP will explain what to expect and how to manage them.

FAQs - Treatment and day-to-day

How long will I be on treatment?

It varies from person to person. Treatment duration depends on your goals, how you respond to the medication, and your GP's clinical assessment — and is typically ongoing for several months, with regular check-ins along the way and an in-depth review at 6 months. Your GP will adjust, pause, or continue treatment based on what's right for you.

How do I take the medication, and will I be shown how?

If treatment is prescribed, you'll be shown exactly how to take it at home — with clear, step-by-step guidance at your first appointment. Depending on what's prescribed, that's either a hands-on demo during your consultation, or a video tutorial and official support materials sent through afterwards. We'll cover everything you need to know about using, storing, and managing your treatment day-to-day. And we're on hand between appointments if anything isn't clear.

How do repeat prescriptions work?

Repeat prescriptions are handled through your patient portal — no face-to-face or video consultation needed unless it's clinically required or you'd prefer one. You'll get an automated reminder when a repeat is due, and before each one you'll submit a quick update covering your current weight, any side effects, your pregnancy status, any recent hospitalisation or upcoming surgery, other weight-loss medication, and any significant health changes. A GP then reviews it and decides whether to continue, adjust, reduce, or pause treatment. If anything needs a closer look, your GP will let you know.

FAQs - Pricing

How much does the medication cost, and is it included in the appointment?

Medication cost isn't included in your appointment. Your consultation fee covers the GP's time, any in-clinic tests, and your clinical follow-up. Medication is paid for separately through a pharmacy, and we price-match to the cheapest online pharmacy providers — so you get GP-led, in-clinic care without paying a premium on the treatment itself.
