Treatment options

Mounjaro and Wegovy: what’s the difference?

Both are prescription-only, once-weekly injections used for medical weight loss. Your GP will help decide whether either is suitable, based on your health, current medicines, preferences and side-effect risk.

Wegovy

  • Active ingredient: Semaglutide
  • How it works: Wegovy is a GLP-1 receptor agonist. It acts on appetite and fullness signals, helping reduce hunger, food cravings and calorie intake.
  • Dose: Treatment usually starts at 0.25mg once weekly and is increased gradually if tolerated.
  • Evidence: In a major clinical trial, people taking Wegovy lost around 15% of their body weight on average over 68 weeks. Individual results vary.
  • Your GP will consider: Your weight, medical history, current medicines, diabetes or eye history, stomach or pancreas problems, pregnancy plans and side-effect risk.

Mounjaro

  • Active ingredient: Tirzepatide
  • How it works: Mounjaro is a dual GIP and GLP-1 receptor agonist. It acts on appetite, fullness and blood-sugar pathways, helping reduce hunger, cravings and calorie intake.
  • Dose: Treatment usually starts at 2.5mg once weekly and is increased gradually if tolerated.
  • Evidence: In a major clinical trial, people taking Mounjaro lost around 15–21% of their body weight on average over 72 weeks, depending on dose. Individual results vary.
  • Your GP will consider: Your weight, medical history, current medicines, diabetes treatment, stomach or pancreas problems, pregnancy plans and side-effect risk.

Eligibility is assessed based on the criteria below and the patient’s medical history
